Load Balancing
No matter how powerful internet servers are, some sites are just too big to run from a single server. Whether it is the sheer number of end users generating traffic, or websites generating complex calculations, there comes a time when more than one server is required. The other factor is one of resilience; if you run a single internet server your website will be unreachable if the server fails or simply requires maintenance, software patching or a reboot.
Load Balancing is sharing traffic across two or more servers, the idea being to spread the load and provide resilience against server failure.
- Increased Uptime; if a server fails end-users are re-routed to alternative servers.
- Increased Performance and Scalability; as your website grows additional servers can be added to provide extra capacity.
- Health Monitoring; servers are monitored to ensure they function well and any unwell servers automatically removed from service.
